Our history

W.F. Denny is a family-run packaging and partyware wholesaler based in south Manchester distributing goods all around the UK . We have 100 years trading experience in packaging distribution and have been specialising in biodegradable packaging for more than 20 years.  In the 1990s we developed our partyware retail shop beginning with lines to complement our packaging range. Over the next 20 years this shop developed into a destination party shop, now in Altrincham, Cheshire, and expanded on to our website to offer balloons, decorations and much more partyware to people all over the UK.

W.F. Denny was established by William Fowler Denny in 1919 after he returned from fighting in World War I and was unable to find steady work. Together with his wife, Jessie, he started his business selling packaging and haberdashery with a wooden cart and a horse which he borrowed from a local baker. As the business grew they moved to his first premises in Great Jackson Street, Hulme where the company officially became a wholesale supplier of smallwares, papers and paper bags.

After the premises in Hulme were demolished in the Hulme Slum Clearance, Mr Denny relocated the business to Stretford Road, Hulme and took on an apprentice in his 14 year old nephew Jack Dale. The Stretford Road premises were bombed during the 1940s Blitz resulting in the business moving once more to Salford. During this time many members of staff were called for military service in World War II including Mr Dale who served in the R.A.F. for 5 years in Europe and the Middle East.

After World War II had ended, Mr Denny brought the company back to Hulme where he continued to run his company with his nephew until he retired in 1960. Mr W.F. Denny died in 1964 leaving the business on to his nephew Jack Dale and Jack’s wife, Kath.  Mr Dale moved the business once more to Sale, Cheshire in 1964 and continued to trade as a packaging merchant until they sold W.F. Denny to John Haken in 1991. Upon their retirement Jack had worked for W.F. Denny for 52 years (including his 5 years in the R.A.F.) and Kath Dale had worked for the company for 42 years.  W.F. Denny is still owed and run by John Haken and his family, more than 25 years after he bought it from Mr Dale.

We are proud of the long history W.F. Denny has over the 100 years  we have been in business. We have moved from inkwells and paper to online trading and EPOS, horse and carts around Manchester to UK wide distribution but in essence W.F. Denny remains a family firm working in unison with our customers to offer the best service and products possible.
